• Rust staining running down from a post base. The stainless fasteners are fine. The problem is usually the mild steel insert inside the post, which corrodes once the base seal fails. A rust trail means water has been inside the post for at least a season.
• Fogging or hazing inside the glass itself. Tempered glass doesn’t fog from seal failure the way an insulated window does, but hard water deposits and salt etching will cloud the surface permanently if the railing sits within splash distance of a pool or gets hit by irrigation overspray. That’s surface damage, not structural, but it’s not reversible.
