Ply Gem Window Installation: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide

Which Ply Gem Models This Applies To

Ply Gem builds several window lines, and the installation requirements differ enough that matching the right approach matters. The Ply Gem 1500 Series is the entry vinyl single-hung and slider line, common in Fort Lauderdale homes built in the 1990s and 2000s. The Mira Series is the mid-range vinyl line with better energy ratings. The Premium Series is their higher-end vinyl and aluminum-clad wood line, and the Great Lakes Series includes the impact-rated models you’ll see more often east of US-1.

To identify your series, open the sash and check the top edge of the frame for a white or silver label with the model number and a string of digits. The last two digits are usually the year of manufacture. If the label is gone, measuring the jamb depth and sash profile against a known sample works, because Ply Gem’s series differ in thickness and balance design. One compatibility point we see constantly in Fort Lauderdale: Ply Gem balance springs and pivot bars are not universal across series. A Mira balance will not fit a 1500 Series window without modification that voids the point of buying the right part in the first place.

Signs Your Ply Gem Window Installation Is Failing

• Condensation between the panes. The insulated glass unit has lost its seal, and in Fort Lauderdale’s humidity, the argon escapes and moisture creeps in. Once it fogs on the inside of the glass, it never clears.
• The sash drops when you lift it. Ply Gem balance springs lose tension over time, especially in south-facing windows where heat and UV accelerate metal fatigue. A sash that won’t stay up is a balance assembly that’s done.
• You can see daylight or feel a draft at the sill. That’s almost always either the sill gasket flattening out or the frame settling out of square. In older Fort Lauderdale homes with concrete block construction, a shifting sill will make even a new window perform like a leak.
• The lock won’t engage or the sash rattles in the frame. Stretched pivot bars and worn cam locks cause the gap that lets the sash move. When the sash floats, the weatherstripping can’t seal.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things: look for a visible label with your model number, test each window for draft at the frame edges, and note which windows fog or bind. That helps us bring the right parts on the first trip, and it costs you nothing.

What you should not do is attempt to remove a full Ply Gem window frame or replace balances yourself, particularly on large sashes. A fully tensioned balance assembly holds real force, and releasing it wrong can throw a sash hard enough to shatter glass or send the pivot bar through drywall. If it’s an impact window, removing the frame breaks the seal and voids the warranty coverage on the whole unit. For the same reason, we don’t recommend trying to replace glazing beads on impact glass. That’s a job for a trained glazier with the right setting blocks and bedding tape.
